Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? Our FAQ page covers everything you need to know about Maverick Survival School’s veteran-led courses, bookings, camping, kit, and more.
The Maverick Survival School is based near Wickham, Fareham.
Postcode: PO17 6JT, UK
⚠️ Important:
The postcode will take you to a residential house, not the parking area.
This is normal — you’re in the right place.
When you arrive at the postcode, do not stop. Continue past the house and follow the dirt track on the left-hand side. Drive for approximately 100 yards, where you will see the Maverick Survival School parking area.
📍 Navigation (choose your method)
You’re welcome to attempt this using a map and compass…
but unless you’re testing your navigation skills, we recommend cheating and using what3words.
The only fully accurate way to reach the parking area is to enter the following into the what3words app:
///pausing.respond.scoping
This will take you directly to the parking area.
🌲 Arrival and parking information
• The site is woodland-based and accessed via a dirt track
• There is no visible signage from the main road
• Please follow the what3words location exactly
• Staff will direct you once you arrive on site

Being prepared for the elements is key to getting the most out of your time with us. Here's what you'll need:
• Warm outdoor clothing – Layer up so you can adjust to changing temperatures
• Waterproof boots or sturdy outdoor shoes – Essential for wet or uneven terrain
• Waterproof jacket and trousers – In case the weather turns
• Gardening or work gloves – For handling tools and materials
• Sleeping bag – Choose one suitable for the season
• Sleeping mat – For insulation from the ground
• Tent or hammock setup – Make sure it's weather-appropriate
• Head-torch – With spare batteries, for use after dark
• Personal toiletries – Keep it simple and compact
• Prescribed medication – Please inform us in advance if needed
• Suncream and insect repellent – Even in the woods, nature doesn’t hold back
And lastly, bring a good attitude and a willingness to adapt — no matter the forecast, your mindset is your best piece of gear.
To keep everyone safe and the vibes good, here’s what not to pack:
• Knives – We know, it’s a survival course. But trust us, we’ve got blades covered.
If you bring your own, you won’t be allowed on the course – no exceptions, no matter how shiny it is.
• Booze or substances – This is a dry zone (and we don’t mean the weather).
No alcohol, no drugs, and definitely don’t turn up under the influence – unless you fancy a very short visit.
• Prescribed meds? All good.
Just give us a heads-up at least a week before the course so we’re in the loop and can support you properly. No surprises, please.
Let’s keep it safe, focused, and enjoyable for everyone.
Yes — we proudly support those who have served, and thanks to funding from the Veterans' Foundation, we're able to offer exclusive discounts on all our courses:
• Survive The Day: Use code VET£50OFF
• Maverick Overwatch: Use code VET£150OFF
• Accredited Axe Throwing: Use code VETS£50OFF
To redeem your discount, you must provide a valid Military I.D number and regiment at the time of booking.
This ensures the Veterans' Foundation’s support is going to the right people — helping those who’ve served access meaningful experiences designed to rebuild confidence, resilience, and community.
Not at all!
Our courses are open to everyone — whether you’ve served in the forces or just served in your local coffee shop. While we’re proud to support veterans and offer discounts to those who’ve served, the skills, experiences, and community we build are for all walks of life. If you’re up for learning, laughing, and maybe getting a bit muddy, you’re welcome here.
The minimum age is 12, but all under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the course.
Let us know in advance — we don’t want anyone feeling financially pressured to buy kit just to attend. We have limited loan equipment available free of charge, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Alternatively, you’re welcome to bring a hammock setup if preferred.
For Survive The Day and Accredited Axe Throwing, please bring your own food, snacks, and drinks for the day.
For the Maverick Overwatch course, we provide:
• Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday
• A hot evening meal on Saturday
We recommend bringing extra food for lunches, snacks, and any personal favourites. You’re welcome to cook over the campfire or bring your own camping stove. Clean drinking water is available throughout the course, and there’s always a kettle on the fire for hot water.
Tea and coffee are provided free of charge.
We currently offer three types of courses:
• Survive the Day:
A full Saturday day session (08:30–17:30)
• Maverick Overwatch:
A full weekend with two overnight stays starting on Friday (18:30) and ending on Sunday 10:30)
• Accredited Axe Throwing:
A full Saturday day session (08:30–17:30)
Our courses take place in woodland environments and are designed to offer an authentic off-grid experience. Facilities are basic but clean. A portaloo with an integrated hand-washing station will be available on-site.
If you’d like to freshen up during the day, we recommend bringing baby wipes or a small personal wash kit, as there are no shower facilities in the field.
We embrace the elements—unless it’s unsafe. The courses run in most weather conditions, as that’s part of the experience and challenge.
Absolutely. Our environment is designed to support both physical and emotional wellbeing. Many of our attendees join us specifically for that reason. If you have any specific needs or concerns, feel free to contact us confidentially ahead of time.
We aim to be inclusive. Please get in touch before booking so we can discuss any support or adaptations needed.
Yes, you can charge your phone — but we can’t promise you’ll want to.
We have a communal power bank station if your battery runs low, but part of the experience is switching off from the digital world. That said, if you really need to post a selfie by the fire or check in with family, we’ve got you covered. Just don’t expect 5G in the woods!
Not at all. Our courses are designed for all experience levels—from total beginners to seasoned outdoorsmen. You’ll be guided every step of the way.
You don’t need to be an athlete. A basic level of mobility is enough.
Absolutely — our courses are open to all genders. We welcome anyone with a willingness to learn, regardless of background. Respect, camaraderie, and a shared love of the outdoors are what bring our community together.
All instructors are qualified, first-aid trained, and courses include thorough safety briefings. We’ve got your back.
Absolutely. We offer bespoke courses for private groups, team-building, and corporate events. Just get in touch and we’ll tailor something for you.
